Clovis High School Instrumental Music Program

Jazz Band “B – C#88313
Jazz band “B” is directed by Mr. Nunes and takes place during zero period in room N21.  All students are welcome to enter this class and no audition is required.  This class will offer all students the opportunity to learn jazz techniques and concepts.

Honors Jazz Band “A”- C# 88037
Honors Jazz Band “A” takes place first period in room N21 and is directed by Mr. Nunes.  This class consists of the most proficient jazz musicians and audition is required.  Students in this group are expected to audition for honor jazz groups and to be on private lessons.

Concert Band – C#88302.B
Concert Band is offered during second period in room N21 and is directed by Mr. Nunes. This class primarily consist of lower class men or advancing students interested in learning a secondary instrument. This class will focus on musical fundamentals and on occasion will be taught as a woodwind/brass class/ and percussion class. Students in this group are encouraged to audition for honor groups and to be on private lessons.  This class period prepares students to audition for Symphonic Band.

Symphonic Band- C#88302.W
Symphonic Band meets during third period in room N21.   Mrs. Rocha Lozano is the director and will be assisted on occasion.    This class is offered to students who already understand the basic foundation of their instrument and provides the opportunity to excel in their primary instrument.  Students in this group are encouraged to audition for honor groups and to be on private lessons.  This class period prepares students to audition for Wind Ensemble.

String Orchestra – C# 88304
String Orchestra takes place fourth period in room E02 and is directed by Mrs. Rocha Lozano.  Students will participate in string concert literature and will continue to work on the fundamentals of string playing.  Students in this group are encouraged to audition for honor groups and to be on private lessons. This class period also prepares students to audition for Advance String Orchestra.

Percussion Ensemble- C#88302.P
Percussion Ensemble class meets during 4th period in room N21.  This class will offer intermediate percussion students the technique to excel in their skills as musicians in the area of concert percussion.

Advanced String Orchestra – C# 88304.AS
Advanced String Orchestra takes place sixth period in room N21 and is directed by Mrs. Rocha Lozano.  Students will participate in chamber playing and advanced concert string literature.  This class consists of the most proficient string students.  Audition is required of every musician for the entry of this ensemble. Students in this group are expected to audition for honor groups and to be on private lessons.

Wind Ensemble – C# 88024
Wind Ensemble rehearses during seventh period in room N21. Mrs. Rocha Lozano is the director.  This class consists of the most proficient wind and percussion students.  Audition is required of every musician for the entry of this ensemble.  Students in this class are expected to audition for honor groups and to be on private lessons.

Symphony Orchestra- C# 88304.SO
Symphony Orchestra takes place eighth period in room N21.  It receives a full academic credit and Mrs. Rocha Lozano is the director. This class consists of the most proficient wind, percussion, and string students.  Audition is required of all string musicians during each semester.  Wind and percussion players will consists of members of the Wind Ensemble.

From August – November this class will meet on Monday and Wednesday  from 3-4:00 p.m. for all string musicians.  During that time, we will focus a lot on sectionals and string technique.  After Thanksgiving break, this class will meet every Monday from 3-4:30 P.M. and Wednesday from 3-4:00 P.M.  On Mondays all wind, percussion, and string players will meet.  Wednesday only string players will meet.   Mrs. Rocha Lozano will pass out a detailed schedule each semester of rehearsal and concerts.

Marching Band & Color Guard P.E. – C#11005
Marching Band & Color Guard P.E. rehearses during the students’ ninth period class.  This class is directed by Mrs. Lozano plus additional walk on staff.  This class period meets Tuesday from 5-8:30 and Thursday from 3:30-6:30 p.m, in addition to some Friday/Saturday rehearsals.  Every student must do four semesters of core P.E. and 4 semester of elective P.E. in order to fulfill the P.E. requirements for the State of California and Clovis Unified.  Marching Band & Color Guard P.E. is and elective class and is only offered first semester.

Dance Color Guard – C# 88220 (Winter Guard)
Dance Color Guard is an elective P.E. which meets second semester during ninth period.  During the first semester all students enrolled in the Color Guard Program will be in Marching Band P.E.  and at the start of the second semester the class will than transition to Dance Color Guard.   Mrs.  Rocha Lozano is the director and will have a full range of color guard instructors. Academic credit will be given as an ninth period course.  Auditions will be required for the fall season as well as for placement of the “J.V” and “Varsity” Winter Guards.

Of Note…
All Instrumental Music Classes (Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Jazz Bands, Marching Band/PE, Orchestra, Dance Color Guard) are graded courses, and carry full academic weight. Grades are based upon attitude, improvement, attendance (rehearsals & performances), private lessons, honor groups, and individual performance tests.
