Clovis High School Instrumental Music Programs 

Jazz Band Programs:
Jazz Band “B” – C#88313.0
All students are welcome to enter this class and no audition is required, however, students must be enrolled in a concert ensemble class in order to be eligible to participate. This class will offer all students the opportunity to learn jazz techniques and concepts.

Jazz Band “A”C# 88313
This class consists of the most proficient jazz musicians (wind and percussion) and audition is required. Students in this ensemble must be enrolled in a concert ensemble class and must be in good academic standing in order to be eligible to participate. Students in this group are encouraged to audition for honor jazz groups and to be on private lessons.

Concert Band Programs:

Symphonic Band –  C#88F11 (Woodwind and Brass Section) 
This class consist of of students students advancing in their woodwind and brass musicianship. This class is taught into two sections, a woodwind and brass section.  Students in this group are encouraged to be on private lessons.  This class prepares students for Wind Ensemble.

Wind Ensemble “Wind Symphony”- C#88F12
This class consists of the most proficient wind and percussion students.  Audition is required of every musician for the entry of this ensemble.  Students in this class are Highly ENCOURAGED to audition for honor groups and to be on private lessons.  All students in this ensemble must be involved with our marching band program or another fall school program (fall sports, Varsity cheer, etc.) and be in good academic standing.

Orchestra Programs:
String Orchestra “Concert Orchestra” (Two Sections) – C#88F10
This class is offered into two sections (intermediate and advancing) students.  These class will offer students the ability to excel on music fundamentals.  Students will participate in appropriate string concert literature and participated in concerts and festivals.  Students in this group are encouraged to be on private lessons. Students are also encourage to participate in our after-school Symphony Orchestra Program to continue to enhance their playing.

 Chamber Orchestra – C#88F07
Chamber Orchestra consists of the most proficient string students at Clovis High.  Audition is required of every musician for the entry of this ensemble and all members must be in good academic standing. Students in this group are HIGHLY ENCOURAGED to audition for honor groups and to be on private lessons. Members in this ensemble will also perform with the Symphony Orchestra and participate in local or community chamber events.

Symphony Orchestra “Concert Orchestra” C#88F09
Symphony Orchestra takes place after-school on Monday’s and Wednesday’s from 3-5 pm and receives a full academic credit.  This class consists of the most proficient wind, percussion, and string students.  Additional string and wind students are encouraged to participate in order to improve on their individual instrument.  Wind and percussion players will mainly consists of members of the Wind Ensemble. This ensemble is part of our pop series and performs many types of music, from the classics to pop! This ensemble is ran similar to a Youth or College Ensemble and individual rehearsal at home is encouraged by all member.

From August – November this class will meet on Monday and Wednesday  from 3-4:30 p.m. for all string musicians.  During that time, we will focus a lot on sectionals and string technique.  After Thanksgiving break, this class will meet every Monday and Wednesday from 3-5 P.M.  Mrs. Rocha Lozano will pass out a detailed schedule each semester of rehearsal and concerts.

Concert Percussion Ensembles
Percussion Ensemble “Concert Band – Percussion Mallets/Drum Line”- C#88F08.P
This class will offer beginning to intermediate percussion students the technique to excel in their skills as musicians in the area of concert percussion. This ensemble participates in solo and chamber concert percussion music throughout the year.  Students will be placed in the appropriate percussion section based on their academic and playing ability.

Dance Color Guard Class:
Color Guard “Concert Band/Guard” – C# 88F08.G
Color Guard/Band is an performing arts class which meets during 7th period.  Rebekah Fleischer is the dance/guard instructor and will be supervised by a credential teacher.  All guard members must have gone through the audition process, be in good academic standing, and participated in the fall/winter marching programs to be eligible to take this class.

Marching Ensembles (Fall & Winter)
Marching Band & Color Guard P.E. – C#11005
Marching Band & Color Guard P.E. rehearses during the students’ eight period class.  This class period meets  2-3 days a week after-school, plus weekends.  All students enrolled in marching band must also be enrolled in one of our 1st – 7th period concert ensembles. Lastly, all students must be in good academic standing to participate. Every student must do four semesters of core P.E. and 4 semester of elective P.E. in order to fulfill the P.E. requirements for the State of California and Clovis Unified.  Marching Band & Color Guard P.E. is and elective class and is only offered first semester.

Winter Guard(s) – C# 88220 (Winter Guard)
Dance Color Guard is an elective P.E. which meets second semester during 8th period.  During the first semester all students enrolled in the Color Guard Program will be in Marching Band P.E.  and at the start of the second semester the class will then transition to Dance Color Guard.  Academic credit will be given as a ninth period course. Students must be enrolled in a concert ensemble/guard dance class during the day in order to be eligible.  Auditions will be required for the fall season as well as for placement of the “J.V” and “Varsity” Winter Guards.

Marching Winter Percussion – C# 88302.P-8 (Winter percussion)
During the first semester all students must be enrolled in the Marching Band P.E. class in order to qualify for one of the marching ensembles.   Auditions will be required for the fall season as well as for the winter season. Students must be enrolled in a concert ensemble during the day and must be in good academic standing with the school.  Students will be accepted based on an audition process that will take place at the end of the first semester.

Of Note…
All Instrumental Music Classes (Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Jazz Bands, Marching Band/PE, Orchestras, Color Guard/Band, Dance Color Guard, Winter Groups) are graded courses, and carry full academic weight. Grades are based upon attitude, improvement, attendance (rehearsals & performances), private lessons, honor groups, and individual performance tests.
